People and profiles

Every number in ClickClacks is made of people. The People page lets you find one, read everything they did across your sources, and fix their identity when two records are really the same person.

Updated

When to use it

  • A customer reports a problem. What did they actually do?
  • You want to see a few real people behind a funnel drop or a friction finding.
  • Support needs to know when someone last used the product.

Finding people

People lists everyone the tracker has seen, most recently seen first, with their plan, sources, events in the last 7 days, and when they were last seen. It loads 50 at a time, with Load more for the rest.

  • Search by email, name or ID. Search matches the start of an email or user ID, part of a name, or a full person ID.
  • By default only identified people show: people your app has called identify for. Turn on Include anonymous to see anonymous visitors too.
  • + Filter by behaviour narrows the list to people who did, or never did, certain events. See Segments.

A person’s profile

Click a person to open their profile. At the top are their events, sessions and when they were first seen. Then two tabs:

  • Activities: their timeline, grouped by session, newest first. Search it, show All events or Actions only, hide noisy events with Hide events, and choose Last 30 days, Last 90 days or All time.
  • Properties: everything known about them.

The right-hand rail shows:

  • Traits from identify. Click a value to find other people with it.
  • Identity: their user ID, browser profiles, devices and the domains they used.
  • Segments they are in.

The header has Add to segment, Filter events to this person and Copy link. The ⋯ menu has Open in Events, Copy person id and Merge with….

Identity and devices

Someone might browse anonymously on their phone, then sign up on their laptop. ClickClacks joins these up for you: the first browser to identify with a user ID becomes the person’s main record, and any later browser that identifies with the same ID is linked to it, including its earlier anonymous history.

To follow people across your own domains, such as a marketing site and an app, see Identity.

Merging two records

Sometimes one human ends up as two people, for example when they signed up twice with different emails. To merge them:

  1. Open one of them and choose ⋯ › Merge with….
  2. Search for the other by name, email or user ID.
  3. Under Keep ID and traits from, choose which record wins. The review shows both records’ events, sessions and first seen, the totals after the merge, and any traits that differ.
  4. Click Merge records.

Events are never rewritten: reports treat the two records as one person. The profile’s history lists Merged from, and Unmerge splits them again at any time. A few places catch up later, such as Realtime and some board tiles, and the merge dialog lists them.

People behind a number

Many reports open a people panel: a point in Insights, a step in Flows, a drop-off in Funnels, a cell in Retention, or a tile on a board. From there, Open in People carries the conditions over, and Save as segment keeps them.

Tips and gotchas

  • Properties belong to events, traits belong to people. A page or UTM value is on an event. A plan or company from identify is a trait.
  • Times use your project’s time zone.
  • A person is not an account. People are the humans your tracker sees, not members of your ClickClacks team. For your team, see Members and roles.

Recipes

A customer says checkout failed. What happened?

  1. Search People for their email.
  2. Open their profile and look at Activities for today.
  3. Search the activity for checkout, and turn on Actions only to skip pageviews.
Repeated clicks on the same button a few seconds apart point to a rage click. Check Friction for a matching finding.

Who are our most active Team-plan users this week?

  1. Click + Filter by behaviour and choose did with your core event.
  2. Scan the Plan and Events · 7 days columns.
  3. Save the filter as a segment to reuse it in reports.
