Overview

Overview is the page we picked for you: how many people came, how they behaved, and where they came from. It is the first place to look each morning, and it needs no setup beyond installing the tracker.

Updated

When to use it

  • A daily or weekly check: is traffic up or down, and why?
  • After a launch, a newsletter or a campaign: did people come, and from where?
  • As a starting point before you dig in with Insights or Funnels.

Overview is fixed. If you want your own set of numbers, build a board. Every card on Overview has an Add to board button, so you can start a board from here.

Reading the page

From top to bottom:

  1. Active people. The headline number, for example ACTIVE PEOPLE · AUG 10 – AUG 20, 2026.
  2. Four metrics: Pageviews, Sessions, Bounce rate and Avg. duration.
  3. The active people chart. Switch between Day, Week and Month points. A one-day range, such as Today or Yesterday, is drawn hour by hour.
  4. Top pages, Referrers and Countries, each as a ranked list with bars.

What each number means

NumberWhat it counts
Active peopleDistinct people who sent any event in the range: a pageview, a click, or an event you track yourself.
PageviewsEvery page load in the range.
SessionsBrowser visits. A session ends after 30 minutes without activity. One person can have several in a range. Events sent from your servers don’t create sessions.
Bounce rateThe share of sessions with only one pageview.
Avg. durationThe average time from a session’s first event to its last, over sessions with at least two events. Shown as 2m 14s.
Top pagesVisitors who viewed each page. Query strings are dropped, so /pricing?utm_source=x counts as /pricing.
ReferrersVisitors by where their first visit in the range came from. Each person appears in one row only.
CountriesVisitors by the country of their first visit in the range.

The lists count Visitors: people with at least one pageview. So a list can add up to fewer people than the Active people headline, which also counts people who only sent other events, from a server for example. Hover the column heading to see exactly what it counts.

Visits from your own domains and from localhost count as Direct / none, so moving between your own site and app doesn’t show up as a referrer. The lists show the top five of each.

Filters and Compare

The full filter bar works here: people (a segment), dates, source and property filters. Changing a filter keeps the current answer on screen, dimmed, until the new one arrives. With Compare off, no changes are shown.

Turn on Compare to see how each number moved against the previous period of the same length. The headline gains a line such as ↑ 8.2% vs prev 7 days, and each metric shows its change. Bounce rate changes in percentage points, and duration in time, such as +12s. Green means better: for Bounce rate that is a fall, and for the others a rise.

Empty states

  • No events yet. The source hasn’t sent anything. The page names the source and its domain, with Install snippet and Check for events. Add the snippet (see Install the tracker) and the page fills in. Autocapture means you don’t need to add any events of your own first.
  • Filters that match nothing show the page with zeros. Remove a chip or widen the date range.

Tips and gotchas

  • Days follow your project’s time zone, set under Settings › Organization Settings › Reporting time zone.
  • Today is still filling up. The last point on the chart is partial until the day ends.
  • Referrers are per person, not per visit. For every visit’s referrer, use Insights with a breakdown by Referrer.
  • Known bots are filtered out when the source’s Filter known bots setting is on. See Sources.
  • The lists aren’t clickable. To dig into a page or referrer, add it as a filter, or open Insights.

Recipes

Did yesterday’s newsletter bring people in?

  1. Set the dates to Yesterday. The chart switches to hourly points.
  2. Look for the spike after the send time, then read the Referrers list.
  3. For tagged links, click Add filter, pick UTM source, choose is and tick newsletter.
The headline now counts only people whose visit came from the newsletter. Turn on Compare to set it against the day before.

Why is the bounce rate up this week?

  1. Set the dates to Last 7 days and turn on Compare.
  2. Check whether Sessions rose too. A jump in sessions from one new referrer often brings a higher bounce rate with it.
  3. In Referrers, click Add filter and filter to the new referrer to see its bounce rate on its own.
If the bounce rate is only high for that referrer, it is the new traffic, not your pages. Check its landing page in Heatmaps.

Put active people on the team’s board.

  1. Hover the active people chart and click Add to board.
  2. Pick a board, or create one with New board.
  3. Under Filters, choose Follow the board so the tile uses the board’s dates.
