Naming events you can still read in a year

An event name is a note to your future self. A few rules keep a tracking plan readable as the product grows.

Tracking plans rarely fail on day one. They fail a year in, when nobody remembers whether signup_done and signup_completed are the same thing.

Three rules that hold up

  • Name the thing that happened, in the past tense: signup_completed, not signup.

  • Put the detail in properties, not in the name: plan_changed with a plan property, not plan_changed_to_pro.

  • Pick one style of casing and never mix it.

What it looks like

clickclacks.track('signup_completed', { plan: 'growth' })
