# Boards

> Build ClickClacks boards: create a board or start from a template, add tiles, linked and standalone tiles, board filters and defaults, arranging, annotations, drilling into a tile, and sending reports to a board.

Overview is the page we picked for you. A board is the page you assemble yourself: the tiles you choose, arranged how you read them, all driven by one filter bar.

## When to use it {#when}

- A weekly team review with the five numbers that matter.
- A board per launch, campaign or client.
- A home page for your project, so it opens on what you care about.

## Create a board {#create}

1. Go to **Boards** and click **New board**, or press ⌘K and choose **New board**.
2. Give it a name, such as _Blog performance_, and optionally a description: _what question does this board answer?_
3. Pick a colour, or keep **Auto**. The colour marks the board in the sidebar when you pin it.
4. Under **Start from**, choose **Blank**, **Product health** (active people, pageviews, sessions, top pages) or **Acquisition** (referrers, top pages, active people over time, countries). Your team’s own templates appear here too.
5. Click **Create board**.

New boards are visible to the whole team. To make one private, open **Edit details** and set **Who can see this board** to **Only you**.

## Add tiles {#tiles}

Click **＋ Add tile**. Browse by _Suggested_, _Numbers_, _Charts_, _Funnels_, _Retention_, _Tables_, _Heatmaps_ and _Text_, or search. **Saved reports** lists your saved funnels, retention and insights. **Templates** adds a ready-made set of tiles.

| Tile | What it shows |
| --- | --- |
| Big number | One metric with its change against the previous period: Active people, Pageviews, Sessions, Bounce rate, Avg. duration or Week-1 retention. |
| Line over time | Active people by day, week or month, as a line, bars or area. |
| Funnel | A saved funnel’s steps, or its conversion only. |
| Cohort grid | Retention by cohort: daily, weekly or monthly, showing 5, 8 or 12 cohorts. |
| Breakdown bars | Top pages, Referrers, Countries or Top events, as a list or a donut. |
| Event table | The newest raw events, all of them or one event name, 5, 10 or 20 rows. |
| Page heatmap | A page’s click map with views and scroll depth, for one device. |
| Note | Markdown text, up to 4,000 characters. |
| Section header | A full-width heading that splits the board into chapters. |

A new tile lands at the end of the board. Click a tile’s **…** › **Edit tile** to open **Tile settings**, where changes preview on the board as you make them. There you can set the title, the metric and chart, a **Target** (with higher or lower is better), and the width and height.

## Linked and standalone tiles {#linked}

- A **linked** tile is pinned to a saved report. Edit the funnel, retention definition or insight, and the tile changes on every board that uses it.
- A **standalone** tile is a copy that lives only on its board.

In Tile settings, a linked tile shows **Open report** and **Duplicate as standalone**. If its report is deleted, the tile says so and offers **Remove tile**.

## Board filters {#filters}

A board has one filter bar for all its tiles: dates, source, property filters, Compare and freshness. It has no segment picker. When you change a filter, a strip says **Filters changed · applies to every tile, only for you**:

- **Reset** goes back to the board’s default.
- **Save as default** makes your filters the default for everyone.

A board default can use **Last 7 days**, **Last 30 days** or **Last 12 months**. Other ranges work while you look but can’t be saved. To give one tile its own range, tick **Ignore the board filter** in its settings and choose a tile range. Notes and section headers ignore filters anyway.

## Arrange the board {#arrange}

Click **Edit layout**. Drag tiles by their grip, set each tile’s width (¼, ⅓, ½, ⅔ or Full) and height (S, M or L), use **Fill row** to stretch a tile to the end of its row, or drag a tile’s right or bottom edge. On touch, press and hold to move. Nothing saves until you press **Done**, and **Cancel** throws it all away.

Keyboard, with a tile’s grip focused:

- `Space` or `Enter` picks up or drops the tile, and the arrow keys move it.
- `[` and `]` make it narrower or wider. `-` and `=` make it shorter or taller.
- `⌘Z` or `Ctrl Z` undoes up to 50 steps while you arrange.

## From a tile to the details {#drill}

Hover a tile and open its **…** menu:

- **Show events**, **View people** and **Edit in Events** open what is behind the number.
- **Watch this…** creates an [alert](https://clickclacks.io/docs/guides/alerts.md) for it, pre-filled.
- **Edit tile**, **Duplicate** and **Remove**. Remove asks first, then offers Undo.

Click a value inside a tile, such as one row of Top pages, for **Show events with this value**, **Show people with this value** or **Filter this board to it**.

## Annotations {#annotations}

An annotation is a dated note, such as a launch or a price change, drawn on every line tile in the project. Add one from the board’s **•••** menu › **Annotations…**, or from a line tile’s menu › **Add annotation…**. Pick a date, a label of up to 80 characters and a colour. Only the person who added an annotation can delete it.

## Add to board from a report {#send}

Overview cards, Funnels, Retention, Insights, heatmaps and Events (under **Save view**) have **Add to board**. The dialog asks:

- **Tile** (Funnels and Retention): **Linked**, which follows the saved report everywhere, or **Copy**, a snapshot for this board.
- **Filters**: **Follow the board**, which uses the board’s date range and filters, or **Keep this report’s filters**.
- **Board**: pick one, or **New board**, which starts with just this tile.

Kept filters are adjusted to fit a board. A custom date range becomes 7 days, 30 days or 12 months, and up to 10 property filters carry over. Segments carry over only to funnel and insight tiles. Insights need saving first, because a tile shows the saved version.

## Managing boards {#manage}

The board’s **•••** menu has:

- **Rename** and **Edit details** (name, description, colour, who can see it).
- **Duplicate board** and **Save as template**, which offers it under New board for your team.
- **Set as my home board**: it opens first when you open the project. This setting is yours alone.
- **Pin to sidebar**, for up to 20 boards.
- **Export as CSV**.
- **Delete board**: removes the board and its tiles, not your saved reports or events. You can undo from the toast.

The Boards list shows each board as a card with a thumbnail of its real layout. Filter by **All**, **Mine**, **Shared with team** or **Drafts**. Search names and descriptions, and sort by **Recently updated**, **Name A–Z**, **Created** or **Mine first**.

To show a board to someone new, [invite them](https://clickclacks.io/docs/guides/members.md) to the project. There are no public share links.

## Tips and gotchas {#tips}

- **An empty “Untitled board” isn’t saved** until you rename it or add a tile.
- **Line over time** charts active people. For any other event over time, save an [insight](https://clickclacks.io/docs/guides/insights.md) and add it.
- **Boards can’t filter by segment** yet. Save a segment-filtered insight or funnel instead.

## Recipes {#recipes}

### A weekly board for a client.

1. Switch to the client’s project and click **New board**. Name it _Weekly report_ and start from **Acquisition**.
2. Add their sign-up funnel from **Saved reports** as a linked tile, and a **Big number** for Week-1 retention.
3. Add a **Note** at the top for this week’s commentary.
4. Set the dates to **Last 7 days**, turn on **Compare**, and click **Save as default**.
5. Choose **Set as my home board** so the project opens on it.

### Mark the launch on every chart.

1. Open any board and choose **•••** › **Annotations…**.
2. Pick the launch date, type _v2 launch_, choose a colour and save.

Every line tile in the project now shows the marker, on every board.

### Which page drove last week’s traffic, straight from the board?

1. On a Top pages tile, click the page you are curious about.
2. Choose **Filter this board to it**.

Every tile now shows only that page. Press **Reset** in the Filters changed strip to go back.
